Creating Your Placemat!
If you are not a weaver, frequently I am asked ...How did you do this? How long did it take? Can you make another one? So let me answer your questions as best I can...

First I select the colors I want to work with and once that's determined, it's time to build my warp. Pictured here on the left, I manually wrap my yarn around pegs on a 'warping board'. To build a warp for a set of two placemats takes about 30 minutes.

My next step is transferring the yarn from the warping board to the loom which takes about 30 minutes because it has to beam on uniformly and snug otherwise I have wobbling and not straight lines when I weave! Next I have to pull each strand through the individual spaces on the ridgid heddle, finishing by lacing it all onto the front beam. Now I'm ready to weave! Total time from removing from the warping board to beginning to weave: approximately 3 hours.
I am fortunate to be creating in a field that I find relaxing and exhilarating at the same time. Each placemat series is laid out inch by inch on a sheet of paper, so I measure as I weave. When cut off the loom, I finish with knots or plain stitches, determined by simple whim on my part!
